Helix goes to Holyrood

Posted Thursday 10th June 2010

The Helix Green Team is stepping up its efforts to promote the healthy lifestyle message.

The 16 young Helix ambassadors travelled to Edinburgh on 9th June to join a group of MSPs for a Big Fit Walk around Holyrood Park. The 30-minute walk started from the front door of the Scottish Parliament.

The politicians were led by Cathy Peattie, MSP for Falkirk East. Also joining in were staff from a range of partnership agencies and representatives from Edinburgh Community Health walks.

Following the walk, the Helix Green Team met with MSPs and briefed them about the Helix. The youngsters were also given a tour of the Parliament building.

Jenny Lim, one of the leading Big Fit Walk organisers, said: “Falkirk Council’s young people are leading the way in the promotion of walking as a free, accessible, green form of physical activity which people can take part in from their very own doorstep. Regular walking is all you need to support good health.

“The Helix Green Team were a great help in taking the campaign to Holyrood and will hopefully have MSPs leading by example, walking around the beautiful Holyrood Park to stimulate their physical and mental well-being.

“Scotland’s weather came up trumps with mid-summer grey skies demonstrating that walking is the physical activity you can engage in, in all weathers. The youngsters were bursting with enthusiasm, dressed in their bright yellow banana coloured t-shirts. They started the day by dancing the ‘Helix’ dance with the other walkers to warm them up for the walk.”

The Holyrood walk was a prelude to the 7th annual Big Fit Walk on Friday 11th June. Over 10,000 people have signed up to take part in walks throughout Scotland.

The Helix will be a hosting a walk from canal lock 2 in Falkirk. Provost Pat Reid and other elected members will be joining the Helix Green Team.
