"The woodland project is a great opportunity to create a place with a distinct local flavour. Local people will feel pride in it and will want to share it with other people.. It will give them a different perception of their own place and shift the perception held by others. I’ve been impressed with how the Helix has engaged with the community. I feel a strong commitment from everyone involved.” Denys Candy, International community development consultant

Abbotshaugh Sculpture - a community project

The formal unveiling of the Abbotshaugh Sculpture has been the culmination of unprecedented levels of community engagement.

Glasgow-based Royal College of Art graduate Jephson Robb was commissioned to lead the design and construction of this major public artwork for the Helix. Originally known as The Abbotshaugh Sculpture, the new artwork 'Love and Kisses' is located in the Abbotshaugh woodland near Langlees in Falkirk.

People got involved!

Jephson Robb worked closely with the residents of Langlees and Bainsford to deliver an artwork which will contribute to connecting and healing the community. The community programme was designed to encourage pride, creativity and stewardship of the woodland. Local people got involved, working closely with the artist to offer ideas, reflections and aspirations for their area.

The community engagement process included:

  • Open day in February 2010 (70 people)
  • Week of events in October 2010 (280 people)
  • Learning journeys - 'Festival of Light'
  • Winter Solstice community gatherings (350 people)

The events were designed to allow local people to revisit, re-imagine and re-make their woodland.

Watch out for news from Helix North.
